Eco-chic weddings … planning a wedding that won't cost the earth

Words by Deborah Segaert

Surprisingly simple, yet elegant ways can be employed to respect the environment while you celebrate your special day. To leave a lighter footprint on the world you do not need to sacrifice style, nor do you both have to be hippies, the only ‘prerequisite' is that you are mindful of the earth.

Stationery

Reducing the amount of paper that you use for your wedding can make a significant contribution. Think of the amount paper used in wedding invitations, event information, RSVP cards, ceremony booklets, menus, place cards and thank you cards for just one wedding.

Remove this footprint altogether and send your invitations via email – with a reminder to consider the earth before printing out the details. Or use a website such as www.evite.com to send invites and receive RSVPs. Alternatively, set up your own wedding website to make announcements, send invitations, receive RSVPs, list your gift registry information and share details, directions and accommodation suggestions with your guests.

If you do wish to have printed stationery, consider recycled and biodegradable products or tree-free paper. Choose products made from 100 per cent post-consumer recycled paper – meaning it has had a prior consumer life such as a cereal box – and use soy or vegetable inks for printing when possible.
